It’s almost here! New York Fashion Week starts February 9 and it’s filled with public events for you to attend. An incredible amount of street style inspiration, pop-up shops and sales to make your closet are sure to happen. Let’s start with…..
You know from H&M’s previous collaborations that they’re all about pushing the boundaries. They let you try out looks you wouldn’t otherwise – because of price and/or personal style. The KENZO x H&M collection is no exception. Creative directors Humberto Leon and Carol Lim even launched the line with a full-out dance party on the runway in Paris, Wednesday. But it was more than the models’ moves that caught attention.
If you love the bold jackets of the 70’s (Think: Macklemore’s coat in the “Thrift Shop” video or leather jackets with a fur lining.), neon colors from the 80’s and a few modern touches, then this collection was made for you.
It represents the avant grade level of fashion with mixed tiger prints, bursts of color, funky patterns and unexpected, extra-loose silhouettes. (This $300 piece is even expected to sell out.)
What does that mean for you?
If you don’t dress like you’re going to be on the cover of a magazine everyday or don’t have a taste for the high fashion looks, this collection may have pushed the envelope a little too far. Styling all of it correctly won’t be easy. But, some pieces may be.
Here’s my edit on what designs may fit your reality best (most under $200) and which ones are just fun to look at.
A walk on the wild side for your closet.
You’ll see from my Polyvore sets below that this collaboration is truly incredible. Calling it “the jungle” would be an understatement given the extreme use of over-the-top animal prints and otherwise elaborate designs.
But, this is still a mass-market line and some pieces will have an easy fit into your closet.
A ruffle detail on the sweatshirt’s collar quickly caught my attention for its ability to make something casual & comfy seems chic, just like that built-in collar under the military jacket. It adds that pop of sophistication and unique detail that screams “whoa you’re cool.” Even the flutter sleeve top has the added bold print to get attention. Finally, the t-shirt creates a new way to be dripping with jewels – with your outfit’s print.
It’s all fun and fairly unilateral to the styles you probably have already. Just pair them with classic, solid pieces to make it look polished.
Don’t like any of it? That’s where the classic black and white tote comes in. There are two styles to choose from for under $200.
Just for Fun
These are not for the minimalist styler. Here’s a few looks to help you get outside your comfort zone and spark a few ideas. I’ll let the clothes speak for themselves, this time.
My Prediction for Nov. 3
This collab will still sell out, and quickly! Whether it fits your style or not, it still represents a level of couture and high fashion that most people either can’t afford on their given budget or usually wouldn’t spend the money on. Plus, some people will pocket the goods before it sells out and then sell them on eBay for profit.
It happened last time.
Frankly, we spend majority of our time at work, with friends or running errands so we look for pieces that can work for all three occasions. Because of this, KENZO x H&M doesn’t fit into the “I just need to put on clothes and go” mindset that the majority of us fall into. Taking it from runway to reality won’t be as easy as swiping a card. I for one, don’t plan on buying anything from it.
If you do, that’s great! It means you found something that truly fits your style! But I do recommend seriously running the numbers and making sure this isn’t just an impulse before hitting the checkout button on November 3.
Of course, there’s still more to see. Catch every look of the 110+ piece collection, here. Or, click into the Polyvore sets to get more details on what I’ve shown you.
Now that you’ve heard my side, I want to hear from you! What are your thoughts on H&M’s latests collab?
New York Fashion Week may be over, but this just means that LFW is already underway!
With shows in multiple countries and thousands of designers trying to get their works in front of the press/buyers/public, there seems to be no way one person can keep up with it all.
At least, that’s probably what you thought.
Here are four easy ways to keep track of all the great things going on in fashion this month (HINT: #4 is the quickest), plus a few things you may have missed during NYFW Spring/Summer 2017.
You’ve seen my runway reviews before, but this one is one of my favorites! I had the pleasure of seeing the GEORGINE Spring/Summer 2017 line in person at Skylight Clarkson Square last week. The show was part of the official New York Fashion Week lineup, so you know there were plenty of security, a Fashion GPS ticket and a handful of celebrities slipping in and out. On the way in, I saw Karlie Kloss (who is even more gorgeou in person!) getting into her car and almost ran into Jason Wu on the way out. Just thinking about it gets me excited all over again!
For those of you who don’t know, GEORGINE is a luxury women’s fashion brand started by designer Georgine Ratelband and Chris Roshia (her partner) back in 2012. According to the site, each collection is meant to reflect “the power of femininity through seductive silhouettes, [that are] enhanced by intricate detailing and extraordinary fabrics.” Its NYFW debut in Fall 2014 was just that with a fun mix of classic silhouettes and edgy details.
The most recent collection followed syit with the twist of exposed midriffs, statement-making materials and intricate details that turned basics into extraordinary pieces. There was a dress with a spiderweb detail, metallic coats and bold red check prints all tied together with choppy, short haircuts and red lipstick. Picture the coolest, rocker chick you can think of, who also has incredible style. Every model wearing this rebel-meets-luxury collection looked like just that.
Here’s a snapshot of the fashion line:
