When Tobi first reached out to do a collaboration, I was so excited I couldn’t stop smiling for an hour!* Cute and affordable, this brand has caught my eye more than once.
In fact, it was their on-trend pieces that got me thinking about Spring’s latest trends and one unspoken fact:
It’s so easy to fall in love with a new style. But, knowing how to make it work with your closet can be a challenge. Queue the “I have a full closet and nothing to wear.” panic. Actually, let’s skip that part.
Instead, here are my top three Spring trends that should seamlessly work with what’s already in your closet.
1. Lace or Crochet Tops
This see-through option often looks like something only a celebrity with a six pack or someone with a perfect body can wear, right? Wrong! I loved the extravagant detailing in the Tobi Rise Above Lace Top they sent me. (It reminds me so much of Anthropologie, but it’s only $22!). So, I wanted to make sure my curvier frame looked great in it!
Instead of baring all with a lace bra or otherwise revealing piece, I copied it’s color.
I paired the white top with my favorite racerback cami from J.Crew (I basically own these in every color!). Then, I complemented the trend with classic skinny jeans in a medium wash, a patent black Michael Kors top-handle bag and nude d’orsay heels by the same designer. The combination of denim and modern accessories made the trend both chic and flattering.
Pro Tip! A lace top can easily be dressed up or down for amost any occasion. Ready for warmer weather? Just switch to shorts and change the accessories or wear it over a spaghetti-strap slip dress with a straw bag for that beachy look.
2. Wrap Skirts
If you know DVF, Diane Von Furstenburg of course, you’re already very familiar with the flattering effects of a wrap. They accentuate the parts you love and help to hide the rest.
To keep things modern, choose a wrap skirt in a versatile print, such as stripes or florals. Then, pair it with a form-flattering top that can be tucked in. The juxtaposition will balance out the alternatively-shaped bottom as well as highlight some of your best features.
For this look, I made sure to have fun with both prints and color. I paired the Sandra Striped Draped Skirt they sent me from Tobi.com (now $48) with a fuchsia J.Crew cami, complementary floral Kate Spade tote bag and silver, Ted Baker oxford shoes.
Pro Tip! Whenever you wear a mini/shorter skirt, always wear flats – no heels! It will keep your look balanced and help prevent an embarrassing moment if you bend down. When in doubt, wear a slip or spandex shorts underneath.
3. Scallop-Inspired Detailing
We first saw this in the Victoria Beckham x Target collection last month. Any look can be transformed with the simple change of a hem or refined neckline. Scallops add a sense of whimsy and class all in one. That’s why I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this style!
The trouble is, because there is already a statement cut, it usually comes in plain colors that need dressing up. So, I had some fun with it.
I paired the Kennedy Scalloped Dress Tobi sent me (now $43) with a few, standout accessories.
My favorite denim jacket by Elle (it’s from Khol’s!) and my mulberry pin gave the dress a more casual feel. Then, I played up the pale pink dress with some bold colors to make sure I didn’t get washed out. (I’m fairly pale so light pinks usually bring this issue.)
My favorite pendant necklace highlighted the scallop neckline with feminine detail while the multi-color Kensie block sandals, tassel-accented Lionel crossbody bag (It’s Vegan!) and vintage floral ring showed off my personal style.
I know all of you have denim, colorful tops and accessories to mix/match. So, you’re all set to make these trends your own!
One more thing: Don’t be afraid to try new brands.
As you all know and can see above, I’m curvy. When I checked the size guide on Tobi.com, I was hesitant because I thought I wouldn’t fit into their clothes. (It only goes up to 8-10). Thankfully, I was wrong. I chose pieces I knew I would feel comfortable in and am happy to make them a part of my wardrobe.
Happy shopping everyone!
