So I came home a few weeks ago to a router that just didn’t want to work and a phone call with my provider that was less than helpful. I had to wait almost three days to get internet again. Not cool.
If you’re a fashion junkie or do most of your work online, like me, this can seem like a nightmare. But, there are options to help save your sanity.
Here are five ways to use this down-time constructively and make things work to your fashion-loving advantage.
1. Grab those magazines you’ve been stashing in a pile by the couch.
We all do it. We get those yearly fashion magazine subscriptions for $5 from Groupon only to read them the first week and let the rest pile up. Even Carrie Bradshaw had a stack of Vogues she would hide in her bathtub. Take a few minutes to relax and read through these. Even the flip of a few pages may give you a new perspective.
2. Celebrate some unplugged freedom with a mini movie marathon
Whether you’re prepping for the new Gilmore Girls season with a re-run of the boxed set or just really love “The Devil Wears Prada,” this is the time to put those DVDs to good use. Watch a few of your favorite flix and unwind while the cable guy takes care of the rest.
3. Use yor data sparingly.
You don’t need a huge phone bill on top of all this. Keep data use on your phone to a minimum. It may be tempting to spend the whole day making Polyvore sets on your phone. But when you don’t have wifi to rely on, you can rack up more than a few gigabytes of usage. Save your wallet from going dry and do as much offline work as possible before turning on that personal hotspot.
4. Ask for an alternative solution from your provider.
You never know what can happen until you ask. Maybe, you can get credit back for that extra data usage or credited on your internet bill for days it was out of service. Then you can use that money for more important things – like coffee so you can use the wifi at Starbucks.
5. Make your brain use those creative juices and do some offline work.
Whether it’s working out of excel or spending the day re-organizing your closet, there’s always something offline you can do to stay busy and productive. Just remember not to panic, email your boss from your phone to let him/her know what’s going on, and go from there.
Everything works out eventually.
