From what I can tell, just about every fashion-obsessed person has a Polyvore account. (I’ve officially had mine for 8 years!) With a click of the mouse, you can style an outfit using pieces from the most expensive designers, test out your interior design skills or give your new boyfriend some inspiration for his closet. In fact, it’s where I design all the product round-up images/sets for my seasonal style guides. (#insider tip!)
Here’s the issue: Most people seem to use their free Polyvore accounts just to make these sets! While sets let you learn about your personal style and play around with some fun combinations, there’s much more to Polyvore than that! You can get access to branded events, find that item you’ve been lusting over for less and much more.
Here are my top 5 tips to help you start using Polyvore like a boss!
Make the search bar your best friend! It’s Fashion’s Version of Google
Whether you’re looking for that perfect red top or a background image, the search bar is probably your first pick. It lets you see every product that’s available and find what you need to make that darling set exactly how you envisioned it. The search bar also lets you filter by price, style and whether or not you want to see items that are on sale.
Use these options to help you shop for exactly what you want at your price point!
Whenever I’m looking for something like striped trousers, a Chloe bag or velvet loafers, my first stop is the Polyvore search bar. All you have to do is type in what you want, put on the filters and click. A myriad of products from different designers and stores as well as various styles will pop up. Once you find what you want, the item’s page will tell you exactly where to find it as well as if it’s sold out so you don’t waste time. (In my opinion, it’s much better than Google Shopping.)
Don’t underestimate the app’s Trending section.
Crafting the perfect style-star look is all about finding the right blend of being on-trend and ahead of the curve. This is where the trending section comes in. On Polyvore.com, you get six trending topics to look at and a smattering of other cool pieces + brands. On the app, it’s just a stream of items popular on Polyvore!
Use the gauze dresses, patchwork denim skirts and more as both inspiration and a source of news. It lets you know what other people are searching for, which items may be missing from your closet, what may be in style next and may give you ideas for your new favorite look.
What better way to stay ahead of the curve than seeing what real people are looking to wear next?
Follow Your Favorite Brands for Advice and Inspiration
Those stores you love aren’t just on Instagram. Neiman Marcus, Lane Crawford, ModCloth, Forever 21, AHA Life, Boohoo and Storets, just to name a few, are all on Polyvore! A special black “official” banner notes that it’s the brand and not a random person that wanted it as their user name.
On top of uploading a sea of products for you to “like”, these companies may feature sets with new ways to style their pieces or even create collections with the best items on sale. They also have a messaging button in case you have any questions/comments/raves and may even sponsor contests. Which, leads me to my next point….
Take Part in Contests for some Sweet Rewards
You’re already making a ton of beautiful sets. Why not use them to your advantage? By taking part in contests, you can: win recognition, increase your published set likes potentially get new followers and you may even score a prize for real life.
Depending on whether it is a sponsored or group-specific contest, you can get: gift cards, discount codes or even a new piece for your closet.
Become a Style Icon for the Ultimate Set of Perks
I recently achieved this and am so happy I did! After publishing 125 sets during a six month period, your profile gets the special “style icon” badge and you get access to a whole new sea of perks! According t0 the Style Insider program page, this includes the potential for early previews/access to product releases, possible Fashion Week attendance during September or February (They choose two people!), and you may be one of the lucky 15 to attend an official Polyvore Meetup. Here are all the FAQs for all the specifics.
BONUS: Like items to get notified when they go on sale!
Because I go through and “like” different products instead of just adding them to sets, I get an email when their prices are reduced! I know as soon as those chic Chanel boots or a Zara sundress I’ve been eyeing goes on sale. It’s an easy way to watch the items you love without the need for an alert or constantly checking its site.
The tips don’t end here! Check back Friday for more sites/apps that help you find what you love for less.
