It’s officially the last week of June and you know what that means – Fourth of July is almost here! It’s time for celebrations, awesome barbecues and a few Instagram-worthy shorts. Of course, looking great on a red, white and blue-themed holiday doesn’t mean you have to stifle your wardrobe. Here are four ways to be festive on the Fourth of July and not look like you just came from a costume party.
Play up Those Stars and Stripes.
No, I don’t mean breaking out your American Flag-inspired top from college. Now is the time to have fun with patterns and show off your unique style. Star details are not uncommon to find and you know from my spring style guide that bold, striped looks are filling every store. So, break out a printed purse and some striped shorts for a fun and effortlessly chic look. Here are two outfit ideas to use as inspiration:
Miss Selfridge denim top, $30 / BCBG MAXAZRIA patchwork shorts / Miu Miu pointed toe shoes / STELLA McCARTNEY chain handbag / Vivienne Westwood earrings, $72 / STELLA McCARTNEY tech accessory, $59
Off the shoulder top / TIBI cropped pants, $75 / Christian Dior black pumps / STELLA McCARTNEY hand bag / Bonheur stud earrings / Marc Jacobs waterproof watch / Eddie Borgo stackable ring / Kenneth Jay Lane choker necklace, $120 / Stella Dot gold jewelry, $29 / Kate Spade phone case, $70
Reinvent the Tri-Color Combo
Wearing all three Fourth of July colors doesn’t mean you have to look like a bad window display. You can pair a soft blue and white gingham or floral look with sleek red shoes, put on a delicate printed set with all three colors in the pattern (This one is on sale!), or dress things up an elegant neutral jacquard top and bold shoes/culottes in your favorite hue of three. It’s all about how you match it!
Storets Dress, $74 / Love Moschino flatform shoes, $96 / Purse shoulder bag , $90/ Layered necklace set, $91 / Polish jewelry $69 / Native Union tech accessory, $104 / MINKPINK gold aviator sunglasses, $40 / Sephora Collection beauty product, $16
When in doubt, pair one piece that has a subtle print/use of color with another that has a bolder design. This will ensure you look put together and not like your closet blew up.
Break Out Some Classic Americana
I’m sure most of you have maxi dresses hidden away in the backs of your closets. Now it’s time to bring them out! Whether yours is a striped beauty or all one color, use it as a holiday-friendly statement piece. Pick out coordinating colors for your accessories and tie it all together with a hint of Americana. You can do this with some low, white sneakers (like this canvas pair for $13), a thin bandana headband or a denim bag. In fact, I created a with two of these pieces look, below:
Zara Dress, $39.99 / White House Black Market slide sandals, $50 / Dsquared2 hand bag, $185 / McQ by Alexander McQueen leather jewelry, $75 / Kate spade earrings, $46 / Cotton handkerchief/ Tech accessory
