H&M released the name of their newest collaboration this Wednesday and the world is already planning when to get in line! (We all remember what happened with the Balmain collab.) This one is set to launch November 3 with a range of pieces for men and women – that means clothing and accessories. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Parisian powerhouse, Kenzo, here are a few details to know before prepping your wallet.
Let’s start with a little history. According to British Vogue, Japanese-born Kenzo Takada started his illustrious fashion career in 1960 after winning the renowned Soen prize in Tokyo. Between the 1970s and 1990s, he opened his own shop in Paris, had his chic “smock tent” dresses featured in American Vogue, gained even more fame and expanded his fashion empire. Menswear and fragrance lines both took his name before he decided to retire in 1999.
Fast Forward to 2011 when Opening Ceremony founders Humberto Leon and Carol Lim took over the creative side. Leon told British Vogue: “With our new collections, we hope that we have injected the brand with a youthful spirit and a sense of fun and cheekiness. But we also want to respect and preserve the traditions of the Kenzo house, such as the importance of prints and the sense of worldliness and travel that has been intrinsic to every collection in the history of Kenzo.”
(Skip to here for a quick read.) Their ideals, haven’t changed since! When H&M announced the new collaboration, the fast-fashion giant also released an interview with Leon & Lim in their magazine. In that article, Leon told H&M’s Mattie Kahn, “We wanted to really tell the story of the brand and of us. Together with H&M, we will invite all the costumers and fans to the real Kenzo world.”
What is the brand’s aesthetic? If you look at the work from 2013 alone to the fall collections shown this past March, you’ll see a mix of sharp tailoring, fun colors, inspired silhouettes, bold prints and risk-taking combinations. This is a brand for an absolute fashion lover who wants to make a statement.
Time for a preview. Right now, Kenzo.com is giving 30 percent off their spring/summer 2016 runway collection for men and women! Prices range from $88 for a brand tee to $1407 for a cool resort-ready maxi dress. Of course, we can pretty much guarantee that H&M’s price point won’t be close to that thousand dollar mark. In fact, the highest priced piece for Balmain x H&M was around $649.
What to expect from H&M – we have a hint! If you look at Kenzo’s homepage, the brand has a bold panoramic video of a woman encased in vibrant patterns and colors in a tropical jungle setting. I’m guessing this means standout prints and enough of a wow factor to catch everyone’s attention. But we’ll have to wait a bit to get specifics.
Until then, I hope you found this helpful and entertaining! I’ll be producing more posts as I learn more about this upcoming collection and any more that may pop up.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
