Congrats to the new class of 2016! All of us post-grads know that life after college takes some adjustment. But once you get used to it, snag that first real job and have some cash stashed away, it can become a lot easier.
In fact, when you get out of work on a hot day like today, you may even start to daydream about taking your first big post-grad vacation. I your finances/savings are covered and you have some extra money on the side – so, why not?!
If this is the case, you probably already read my vacation hacks article for all the best savings tricks. Now, I’m going to share exactly what to pack to make your whole process easier:
Anyone who studied abroad during college (see picture above) knows that you need to be precise when packing for a big trip – or you’ll regret it.
Start with the basics.
Your favorite shampoo, soap, contact solution and toothpaste may not be available in another county. (Or it can just cost an insane amount of money!) So, pack these first in a size fit for your vacation length. You don’t need a full-sized bottle in your checked-baggage if you’re justing going for a week.
Go for your most chic and versatile looks.
Think like you are about to pack a capsule wardrobe. Choose different shorts, tanks, tops and shirts that can make a few outfits. The variety of options should keep you from over-packing and it won’t “box you into” a specific look once you reach that awesome destination.
Simple accessories are key!
That black cross body with a zipper, those chic gold rings and some UV sunglasses will literally become your best friends. Sunnies are an easy fix to help you enjoy the view on a super-bright day. Choosing classic jewelry means it will go with every outfit you pick. Plus, that bag can also help deter muggers.
Going for a secure bag that stays close to your body means you can keep your hand on it/over the zipper and it may be a little harder for some random thug to take it away from you. (At the very least, this is what I used abroad and I never had my things stolen. In the end, nothing helps like just staying alert.)
Forget those 4 pairs of heels.
You won’t wear them. Whether you’re going to Bermuda or Barcelona, you never really know where the trip will lead you; and you don’t want to stop an adventure just because your feet hurt. Slip a pair (or two!) of cute flats, sandals and slip-ons into the bottom of your luggage. You’ll be comfortable, chic and ready for a few Instagram pics without the threat of blisters ruining your night.
If you’re going on vacation with a good friend, don’t do double duty.
You don’t need two things of sunblock, two hairdryers or two cans of hairspray for just a few days away. Plan ahead with whomever your traveling with so you don’t pack twice as much for no reason. You can even do a shared Google Doc to keep track of everything you’re both packing.
One more, every important thing:
Don’t forget to check what you’re packing against the TSA/Airline regulations. The last thing you want is being searched at the airport and missing your flight over something seemingly silly. (Having luggage that’s overweight won’t be fun either.)
Hope these suggestions help! If you liked them, please share this post and have a wonderful vacation! I can’t wait to hear about your trip in the comments.
