Netflix gives you a limited movie library. Hulu has you pay for commercials along with your subscription. All this just to watch your favorite shows on your time. Did you know there are ways to get around that?
As part of my living luxe for less series, I’m focusing on the one place where you will always binge, entertainment. Here are a few tips to make sure you have everything you need at a budget-friendly price.
Take a Look the Stations Themselves
You can easily grab your laptop or phone and watch any show you like – legally! Just go to the T.V. stations’ websites. Watch Downton Abbey‘s very last episode on PBS online. Fall in love with episodes of The Bachelor on ABC.com. Or , you can even catch up on The People v. O.J. Simpson on FXNetworks.com. It’s as simple as that. (Just remember some of these stations may be a week behind the latest episodes.)
Look into Other Subscriptions/Yearly Rates
Costco and Sam’s Club are more than amazing free samples! If you take a look around the gift card section, you will usually see two tickets to AMC Theaters or Regal Cinemas for around the price of one. (I get them at about $17 a pair.) Or, you may even see a larger discount (think paying $80 for $100 in movie theater gift cards). Just keep in mind that the price of a yearly membership ranges from $45 to $55 at the lowest levels.
For the rest, don’t forget Amazon Prime.
Amazon charges $99 for a year of movie and T.V. streaming as well as 2-day shipping on most things and free books. If these sound like a benefit to you, then it may be worth looking into, especially when you compare the price to other streaming sites. Both Netflix and Hulu offer premium service for $11.99 a month or about $144 a year. Even the more basic levels can cost between $95.88 to $120.
Mark Free Trial Days
Still want something different? Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu (if you have a college email) will offer the first 30 days as a free trial. Just make sure to keep track of when these days end and cancel your subscription on time. Otherwise, your card will be charged the associated monthly fee.
Find Out What’s Best for You
Of course, this is just an overview. Before you buy a subscription or yearly pass to anything, I suggest finding out all the specifics you personally need and seeing if it makes sense with your budget.
